When people move in the context of environmental change they often fall between the gaps of existing legal protection. How should the law protect people who move in the context of environmental change? Does existing legislation provide enough to protect such people? Or are new laws and frameworks needed?

This event encourages participants to explore and discuss the vital questions relating to the legal status of people who move in the context of environmental change.

The event will explore

  • existing legal protection for people who move – can this protect people who move in the context of climate change?
  • gaps in legal protection
  • possible options for improving legal protection for people who move in the context of environmental change

Participants will also be encouraged to explore wider issues around migration, displacement and climate change, such as

  • is it possible to pick out a groups of people who move because of climate change? What are the legal implications of this?
  • how are climate change and the movement of people connected? Is there a clear causal link, or is it more complex?
